Fargo Special Election

The city of Fargo is holding a special election regarding a change in the city's form of government.

 

Ballot Question: Shall the city of Fargo change from its organization under the commission system of government and become a city under a ward-based council form of government.

Overview

Current System: Commission

Proposed System: Ward

  • Consists of 5 commissioners, elected at large
  • One commissioner serves as Mayor
  • The Mayor and other 4 commissioners each possess an equal vote
  • 6 council members elected from 6 wards
  • Mayor would be elected at large
  • Mayor would not typically vote on matters before the council, unless to break a tie
  • Mayor would hold a veto power which could be overridden by a 2/3 vote of the council members
